The Snow Devils began in 1964 as fourteen friends exploring the Teton backcountry on snowmobiles. Their friendly competitions soon led to the first official Hill Climb in 1975 — a spirited race up Kelly’s Alley that sparked a Jackson Hole tradition. By the 1980s, the event had moved to Snow King’s Exhibition Run, where racers tackled slopes up to 45°. In 1987, Ward Barnes became the first to summit the mountain — launching the World Championship Snowmobile Hill Climb as we know it today.
The race has since evolved into a national spectacle, attracting 10,000+ spectators, 300 racers, and 400 volunteers each March. Yet, the heart remains the same — camaraderie, courage, and community.
“From a handful of riders to a global event — the mountain made legends of us all.”
Every spring, the Hill Climb fuels scholarships, safety education, and charitable giving. Our volunteers turn adrenaline into impact — strengthening Jackson Hole through action.
Every spring, more than three hundred competitors arrive from across North America—RMSHA pros, semi-pros, and fearless first-timers—all chasing a summit only few will reach.
Jackson Hole comes alive with fans lining the mountain and cheering from every ridge. For four days, the valley turns into the loudest, most passionate crowd in winter motorsports.

Held each March on Snow King Mountain, the World Championship Snowmobile Hill Climb challenges racers to conquer 1,574 vertical feet at slopes reaching 45 degrees. Each climb is a battle of power and precision — and every year, new legends are born.
From Ward Barnes’ historic summit in 1987 to Keith Curtis’ record nine King of Kings titles, this event continues to define snowmobile racing.
The Jackson Hole Snow Devils are a 100% volunteer organization. Our officers and board members bring decades of dedication to both snowmobiling and community service.
