Division Rules

The Hill Climb welcomes riders of every level — from seasoned pros to young competitors chasing their first summit. Sanctioned by the Rocky Mountain States Hillclimb Association (RMSHA), each division has its own rules, speeds, and rewards.

The Pro Division is the highest level of competition at the World Championship Snowmobile Hill Climb. These are the classes where RMSHA-qualified racers and factory-backed teams bring their best builds to one of the steepest, most technical courses in North America. This page outlines the Pro Division rules, sled requirements, safety standards, and how results feed into King titles.

Quick Facts

  • Division: Pro
  • Eligible Racers: RMSHA-qualified Pro racers and invited competitors
  • Classes: 600 Stock, 600 Improved Stock, 600 Mod, 700 Stock, 700 Improved Stock, 700 Mod, 900 Stock, 900 Improved Stock, 900 Mod, 1000 Stock, 1000 Improved Stock, Open Stock, Open Mod
  • Engine Groups: 600, 700, 900, 1000, Open
  • Required Insurance: Current ISR race insurance
  • Safety Standard: ISR rules + Jackson Hole Snow Devils Hill Climb rules
  • Governing Body: RMSHA-sanctioned event
  • Linked Titles: Stock King, Improved Stock King, Mod King, King of Kings

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must hold RMSHA Pro classification or receive a formal invitation from race officials.
  • Must meet all current ISR requirements, including licensing and insurance.
  • Must be in good standing with RMSHA and not under suspension from any sanctioned event.
  • Prior-year performance and accumulated RMSHA points are used to determine starting positions and qualifying status.

Sled Requirements

Stock Sleds
Stock classes are intended for sleds that retain OEM components within the limits allowed by current RMSHA and ISR rules. Any modifications must fall within the official Stock guidelines; significant changes to engine, chassis, or suspension may move the sled into Improved or Mod.

Improved Stock Sleds
Improved Stock classes allow selected performance and durability upgrades while maintaining the overall character of the original sled. Modified components must comply with RMSHA Improved rules. Major engine or chassis alterations beyond those rules will be considered Mod.

Mod Sleds
Mod classes are for highly modified, competition-focused sleds. Engine, intake, exhaust, suspension, and chassis modifications are broadly permitted within RMSHA and ISR safety and displacement limits. All Mod sleds must still pass full safety and tech inspection.

Tech Inspection Checklist

  • Functional tether that immediately kills the engine when disconnected.
  • Working brakes and responsive throttle with safe return.
  • Approved mudflap installed and in good condition.
  • Traction devices (studs, screws, or similar) that meet Snow Devils rules for length, quantity, and placement.
  • Number plates that are clearly visible to timing and course officials.
  • Overall sled condition free of leaks, structural damage, or unsafe repairs.
  • Final legality and class placement are determined by Snow Devils tech and safety staff.

Safety Gear & Conduct

Required Safety Gear

  • ISR-approved full-face helmet in good condition.
  • TekVest or equivalent upper-body impact protection.
  • Goggles or equivalent eye protection.
  • Gloves, boots, and race-appropriate outerwear suitable for conditions.
  • Any additional protective gear required by ISR or Snow Devils for the year’s event.

Pit & Staging Rules

  • Obey pit speed limits at all times; no aggressive riding in the pits or staging areas.
  • Only credentialed racers and crew are allowed in designated pit zones.
  • Follow the directions of staging and starting-line officials without delay.
  • No alcohol or impairing substances in the pits, staging, or on-course at any time.

On-Course Conduct

  • Racers must maintain control of their sleds and avoid exposing other riders, officials, or spectators to unnecessary risk.
  • If forward progress is lost, racers must safely angle the sled to avoid a downhill runaway.
  • Obeys all course flags, signals, and marshal instructions immediately.
  • Failure to comply with safety directions may result in disqualification or removal from the event.

The Semi-Pro Division is the bridge between amateur racing and full Pro competition. This is where developing racers earn their stripes on the same steep, technical course used by Pro classes. The guidelines below define who can race in Semi-Pro, how sleds are classified, and how Semi-Pro results connect to Semi-Pro King titles and potential advancement to the Pro ranks.

Quick Facts

  • Division: Semi-Pro
  • Eligible Racers: RMSHA Semi-Pro classification or approved developing racers
  • Classes: Semi-Pro Stock, Semi-Pro Improved, Semi-Pro Mod

  • Safety Standard: ISR rules + Jackson Hole Snow Devils Hill Climb rules
  • Governing Body: RMSHA-sanctioned event
  • Linked Titles: Semi-Pro Stock King, Semi-Pro Improved Stock King, Semi-Pro Mod King, Semi-Pro King of Kings

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must hold a current RMSHA Semi-Pro classification or be designated Semi-Pro by race officials.
  • Intended for racers progressing toward Pro who are not yet competing in full Pro classes.
  • Performance in Semi-Pro may influence eligibility to move into the Pro Division in future seasons.

The Amateur & Exhibition Division features four capped, non-invite classes—Non-Pro Masters, Amateur, Amateur Vintage, and Pro Vintage—built for riders who want to compete outside the Pro field while still meeting full ISR and Snow Devils safety standards. These divisions showcase rising talent, seasoned riders, and vintage sleds, with qualifying on Thursday and the top five from each advancing to Friday Finals.

Entry into these classes is handled through an advance request-and-draw process, with strict eligibility rules, sled requirements, and mandatory ISR insurance for all racers. From period-correct vintage builds to modern stock turbo machines, this division offers some of the weekend’s most diverse and entertaining runs.
